The Clarion Ledger featured an article on today’s front page about the growing demand for Abita’s Strawberry Harvest Lager. The article quoted Rick Miles, owner of Hops & Habanas.
Last year, Hops & Habanas in Madison only received one shipment of the much-lauded beer.
Now they’re hoping for four, said owner Rick Miles.
On April 23, the specialty beer store had its second Abita Strawberry payload delivered, he said.
“We posted on Facebook at 8 a.m., and it was gone by 4 p.m.,” Miles said.
Over the years, Miles said he learned to make sure he doesn’t advertise the beer until it’s on the premises. Changing shipment schedules and other events sometimes have led to delayed deliveries.
“Everybody loves it so much, and we don’t want to have people coming here just to be disappointed,” he said. “So we don’t ever put anything out there until it’s in the store.”

Results: Golden Triangle Brewers 2012 War of the Wort Winners

Both Lazy Magnolia Brewing Company and Raise Your Pints were featured in an article written by Sean Lewis for April 2012′s issue of BeerAdvocate Magazine. The article highlights the recent successes of the legislative efforts to modernize Mississippi’s beer laws and Lazy Magnolia’s success throughout the state and region.
“We are an all-volunteer, grassroots group of a bunch of beer geeks that live in a state with some of the worst laws regarding craft beer in the country – probably the worst laws,” Raise Your Pints president Butch Bailey says. “We got tired of driving to other states to buy craft beer, so we did what Americans do. We organized.”
…
“Everything is kind of designed toward the Southern palate,” Hatcher says. (Gar Hatcher, Lazy Magnolia Production Manager) “We are in an area that is new to craft beer, and we are a lot of people’s first experience with craft beer. As such, we take our educational responsibility very seriously, and that includes not overwhelming people’s palates. It takes time to develop an educated consumer base.”

Having trouble getting your hands on this elusive brew?
The Shell at the corner of Fortification Street and Jefferson Street in Belhaven (across from McDades Grocery Store) has 21 cases in the store. They retail for $8.99. Only a couple of the six packs are in the cold vault. Get them while they last.
“Strawberry Harvest Lager is a wheat beer made with real Louisiana strawberries, picked late in the season when they’re at their sweetest. This brew has earned quite a reputation in a short time, causing the brewery to up their production year after year. When this brew is found, emails and phone calls fly to friends informing them of the store’s location. Strawberry Harvest is a crisp, light lager with just a hint of strawberry sweetness. It is wonderful with desserts or lighter fares such as salads and pastas. Fresh cheeses such as Burrata, chevre, Creszenza, mozzarella or Teleme pair well with Strawberry Harvest.” via Abita.com

McDade’s Markets are expecting shipments of Abita Strawberry Harvest Lager this afternoon.
High Cotton Brewing Company will become the second brewery to call Memphis, TN home behind Ghost River.
Lazy Magnolia’s newest release, Southern Hops’pitality IPA, is now available for growler fills @ Hops & Habanas.
“What are growler fills?” A growler is a large container used to contain beer. Hops & Habanas recently added draft beer in growlers to their product offerings. They are 64 fl ounces (1/2 gallon). The growler costs around $7 and the beer that you purchase varies. The first fill you pay for a growler and the beer. Every time after that, you can just bring the growler in to be filled and just pay for the beer.
Currently Hops & Habanas is selling Southern Hops’pitality for $10.99.
Get your growler while it lasts. I don’t know of another place to buy this beer.

Newcastle’s newest seasonal can now be found on shelves in Mississippi.
“Don’t let its light, golden-yellow color fool you. Our Summer Ale packs a secret punch that’s just as bold as it is refreshing. It’s crisp with a touch of caramel, medium sweet in the middle, with a deliciously dry, hoppy finish that’s just the thing for a warm summer’s day. Or any time you’re feeling summery, really.” via newcastlebrown.com
Available now through July.
