By now most of you’ve heard the good news regarding the recent change in Mississippi Law that was finalized last week. For the first time in our state’s history, breweries will be able to offer samples of their products to the public under the same roof they are brewed! While we have yet to officially announce how we’ll be structuring our tours and tastings when the law goes into effect July 1st, we can assure our fans and supporters that we WILL be sampling our brews on-site! This is a much-anticipated milestone that we’ve been patiently awaiting for years and have every intention of embracing it with open arms.
However, this isn’t the only addition to our brewery; over the next 8 months, we’ll be undergoing a major expansion at our facility located in Kiln, MS. We’ll be going from 10,000 square feet of space and an annual capacity of 15,000 barrels, to nearly 30,000 square feet with a capacity of 45,000 barrels. With this expansion comes a picturesque tasting room, a 60 barrel brew house, 2 240 fermentors and a 240 barrel bright tank. This expansion was made possible through a collaborative stimulus initiative from both the Rural Development Authority (RDL) and the Mississippi Department Authority (MDA), which aims to alleviate unemployment in Mississippi. That being said, by the year 2016 we’ll have brought on an additional 21 employees, allowing us to nearly double our current staff.
The good news doesn’t stop here folks! Mississippi has surpassed yet another hurdle in the area of ABV restriction for products brewed within the State. We’re proud to announce that this summer we’ll be releasing Timber Beast, an Imperial Rye IPA, beginning July 1st to commemorate this achievement. Resting at an 8.5 % ABV, this spicy, full-bodied, rye pale ale balanced with a generous dose of Zythos hops, will be the first brew in Lazy Magnolia’s Back Porch Series. This commemorative package will be available in 4 packs at most retailers in our major markets, and on draughts at your favorite pubs.
It’s been a great year thus far at Lazy Magnolia, but it’s only going to get better as we’re able to share our passion for brewing and quality products with the people that mean the most: our loyal fans and supporters.
BIG Cheers Y’all

Crooked Letter Brewing Company was recently featured in a news story about their upcoming opening.
“It just happens to be that over the past few years the state itself has made a lot of progress with beer,” said Paul Blacksmith, Crooked Letter’s general manager. “We started this project not counting on any of the legislation taking effect. We’ve gotten a lot of questions about if we’re doing this because of the legislation. The answer to that is no.”
Crooked Letter would become the state’s second brewery, joining Hancock County’s Lazy Magnolia Brewery.
. . .
The Blacksmiths hope to break ground on their building July 2, and have beer on the shelves this fall, perhaps in October or November. They said they’re close to finalizing contracts with distributors – they wouldn’t reveal which they’ll use because nothing is signed yet – within Mississippi and Alabama. There’s also the matter of procuring a few more pieces of equipment for their 30-barrel facility.
. . .
Whatever they produce won’t be confined to Mississippi. Paul Blacksmith said the plan is for Crooked Letter beer to be in neighboring states “shortly after the New Year.”

Bottle Reads:
Notes:
- Bottle signed by Leslie Henderson, Brewmaster and COO of Lazy Magnolia.
- This is an Imperial Rye Pale Ale not a Rye India Pale Ale
- 8% ABV
- First in Back Porch Series
- This is rumored to be released to celebrate the ABW cap increase.
- Notice the man in the middle is a lumber jack and the beer is named Timber Beast. Butch Bailey, President of Raise Your Pints, is a Forrester and responsible for making it legal to sell beers with this high of a alcohol content.
- Notice the lumber jack’s hat. Text reads “RYP” for Raise Your Pints.
- Lazy Magnolia should press release this soon.

Currently it is unlawful for Mississippi breweries to sample their beers at the brewery. This will change soon. Governor Phil Bryant signed into law Senate Bill 2600 which will allow samples to be served with certain restrictions.
SECTION 1.
(1) A person having a permit to manufacture or brew beer under this chapter and who operates a brewery may offer and provide limited amounts of beer on the premises of the brewery for the purpose of tasting or sampling, subject to the following conditions:
(a) The beer provided for tasting or sampling must be manufactured in the State of Mississippi by the holder of the permit;
(b) The beer may be provided only to persons on the premises of the brewery at no cost and for consumption on the premises of the brewery;
(c) The beer may be provided for tasting or sampling between the hours of 8:00 a.m. and 10:00 p.m. on the same day and only in conjunction with a structured tour of the brewery and related facilities which must include the entire manufacturing and brewing processes and methods used at the brewery;
(d) No one under twenty-one (21) years of age may participate in the tasting or sampling, and a sign indicating that prohibition shall be placed in a visible location at the entrance to the area where the tasting or sampling will be conducted;
(e) An individual size sample of beer shall not exceed six (6) ounces, and no more than six (6) samples of beer may be provided to an individual within a twenty-four-hour period; and
(f) The holder of the license operating the brewery shall keep an accurate accounting of the various beers provided and consumed as samples.
(2) For the purposes of this section, the term “brewery” means and has the same definition as that term has in 26 USCS 5402.
This law will take effect July 1, 2012.
This is great news for Mississippi’s breweries. This will only affect Lazy Magnolia on July 1, but will allow future breweries (Lucky Town Brewing, Crooked Letter Brewing, and Gordon Creek Brewery) to sample on site as well.
Sampling is a vital part of the touring process and greatly adds to the impact of a brewery tour. This is the first step of initiatives to modernize the laws regarding Mississippi’s breweries on-premise and off-premise consumption. The next step would be to legalize on-premise sales and then off-premise sales. This would allow you to visit a brewery, sample their product, then buy a pint, and buy a growler/bomber/six-pack to take home. This is probably a long way away, but most states allow their breweries to operate in this manner.
Great job in lobbying for this bill Lazy Magnolia!
