Crooked Letter Brewing received the approval they needed to move forward on their proposed brewery at their location behind Broom’s in Ocean Springs. Tonight, the City of Ocean Springs held a planning meeting, and the brewery’s plans were heard and approved. The next step will be State and Federal Licensing. Crooked Letter Brewing plans to be in production later this year. They also recently posted about their equipment shipment on their Facebook page.
Who’s ready to see our Tanks and Kettles?! We’ll be posting pics in the next few days. Stay tuned…. they’ll be on their way shortly!

Crooked Letter Brewing Company is urging everyone to come out in support of our new brewery location, tomorrow evening. The Planning Commission meeting is at 6 PM in the O.S. City Hall. Please, please, please pass this along to everyone you know and urge everyone to show up! This is extremely important to the brewery. If we don’t get this site then it will be at least another few months added on to our opening schedule, not to mention the extra money spent and lost! I hope to see many of you guys and gals there!
In light of the fact that our Ocean Springs Planning meeting is tomorrow at 6pm at the OS City Hall, which we encourage all local fans to attend, we would like to make the following statement, as we are still being asked by new-comers to craft beer, what the difference is between a Brew-Pub and a Brewery in Mississippi.
Here is the run down.
#1 We are a manufacturing facility. This means that we make beer and we ARE NOT A BAR.
#2 Individuals will not be able to buy craft beer direct from Crooked Letter Brewing CO. (Sorry troopers, but that is Da Rulz)
#3 We produce awesome beer then sell it to a distributor.
#4 The distributor comes to us once a week and picks up the fruits of our labor.
#5 The distributor then takes it back to their warehouse for storage.
#6 The distributor sells it to establishments who are legally able to buy and sell beer.
#7 From these very cool places you, the savvy craft beer drinker, will be able to obtain that which is the Crooked Letter awesomeness!
#8 This means if the establishment you are in run out of The Crooked you or they can not come to our facility to get more. The said place that is able to buy and sell beer, that did not buy enough of The Crooked, and has let the river run dry, must call our distributor to obtain the Crooked Letter craft beer from Distributor’s warehouse, not ours.
This is indeed how it works!
Please plan to attend the Planning Commission Meeting Tuesday to show your support.

Ocean Springs location appears to be very promising. However, we are set for a Special Use Permit hearing on August 14th, and will not be setting up shop until all approvals are in place. Shooting for an Early November Grand Opening.
Update (7/22/12 10:21PM):
The hearing will be at 6 PM on August 14th at Ocean Springs City Hall. Please come out to show your support if you are able to.

OCEAN SPRINGS, MS (WLOX) -
Beer business wants to bring locally made beer to Ocean Springs
A craft beer company wants to now brew beer in downtown Ocean Springs, after being rejected by Jackson County supervisors. Last month, supervisors voted against granting a special exception permit to Crooked Letter Brewing that would have allowed them to open in Vancleave. The business owners are hoping this move will be the last.
Those who live in or around downtown Ocean Springs are likely familiar with Broome’s Grocery on Government Street. Store Manager Curmis Broome wants new company Crooked Letter Brewing to join the downtown family.
“I love craft beer and I think it would be something unique to bring to Ocean Springs, a town that thrives itself on being unique,” Broome said.
Broome has offered to lease a 2,200 square foot warehouse in the back of the store to craft beer makers Wanda and Paul Blacksmith. The couple said they’re thirsty for a new opportunity.
“I think this will be a fun location and it is tucked away, a little treasure hidden, and it is not all in everyone’s faces,” Wanda Blacksmith said.
The Blacksmiths’ original plan was to brew beer on their land in Vancleave. But some of the Blacksmiths’ neighbors complained to Jackson County Supervisors and the business was blocked.
“No, we are not bitter. At first we were disappointed, but we have moved on that is behind us,” Mrs. Blacksmith said.
The business owners next challenge is getting the Ocean Springs Planning Commission to grant them a special permit to start their craft beer brewing operation. The couple is now calling on folks in the community to support this proposal.
“Ocean Springs has embraced craft beer. So, having an actual craft microbrewery in downtown Ocean Springs is going to be very unique,” Paul Blacksmith said.
“It will bring lots of taxes, lots of tourism; it is a trend right now for people to do vacations based on brewery’s,” Wanda Blacksmith said.
The couple said those benefits, the new location, and help from people, who live and work in the city will be enough to seal the deal so they can start brewing beer.
The Ocean Springs Planning Commission Meeting will be held on August 14 at city Hall at 6 p.m.

We would like to announce our new location! It was quite difficult narrowing down invitations. One such invite came from Curmis Broome with Broome’s Grocery on Government St, Downtown Ocean Springs. They proposed that we occupy the Broome’s Grocery Warehouse on the north side of their Parking Lot. It’s a hidden treasure, and is within 15 minutes from our Home, which is very important. Watch WLOX tonight at 10pm. A follow up story was filmed this morning, on location at Broome’s.
