Eat Jxn recently featured Tallgrass Brewing Company on their web site.  It appears Eat Jxn has started a Craft Beer Spotlight series and began with Tallgrass. Follow the source link for the full article and interview with Tom Mahoney of Tallgrass.

Mississippi folks get really fired up about Craft Beer these days. And thanks to the recent implementation of the “beer laws” earlier this summer, the people of Mississippi are on a craft beer buying high!

Since most of the high gravity beers now available in the state are from craft breweries, Eat Jackson decided it was time to start get more familiar with these particular breweries.

Tallgrass Brewing Company is our first featured craft beer brewery.

Maybe we’ve been sampling too much of the product around here. ‘Cause it sure looks like those Halcyon cans are the same size as those 8-Bit cans. Hmm…could it be…

WCBI aired a 5 minute piece on the new beer legislation taking effect July 1.  The piece featured Kurt Chrissy of Brewski’s, Chris Parker of Halfway House, and Kenneth Toller of Mitchell Distributing.

Kenneth with Mitchell talks about Freckle Belly IPA from Back Forty and Velvet Rooster from Tallgrass coming.  Kurt and Chris both discuss the timeline for getting these products in their establishments.

The news piece displays the Lazy Magnolia logo a couple of times.

Tallgrass gets label approval for Honeyfest Lager

On June 28, 2012, in New Products, by Wesley Clark

Tallgrass recently got federal approval for their Honeyfest Lager.  The can claims this is an Octoberfest-style Lager and brewed with honey.

I contacted Tallgrass to see if they were going to register this with the state.  They said they hadn’t begun registering it with all the states and would know more later when that time comes.

Raise Your PintsThanks to Raise Your Pints, Lazy Magnolia, Phil Bryant, several key legislators, and thousands of craft beer enthusiasts, Mississippi’s legally allowable alcohol limit in beer is soon to be raised. On July 1, 2012 it will be legal to sell beer with alcohol up to 8% ABW or roughly 10% ABV. This will allow several great beers from breweries that currently distribute to the state to be sold now. Below is a list of what beers can be expected on July 1 or shortly thereafter:

Lazy_Magnolia_Brewing_Company_logo.jpg

These guys/gals have been pushing for the alcohol cap to be increased since day one. They were instrumental in the process of getting this accomplished. You better believe they are brewing up something for July 1 (or shortly after). Lazy Magnolia recently released their Southern Hops’pitality IPA in draft only. This brew hits around 60 IBUs and 6% ABV. They released this as a seasonal brew as draft only (no bottles). My theory is that this will be replaced by a standard year round IPA that is more bitter than 60 IBUs and has a higher alcohol content. I also expect to see some higher hitting stouts and other brews. I’d look to see a lot from these guys in the upcoming weeks. Stay tuned here and to their website / Facebook for upcoming releases. I’d expect some news soon! Show these guys that you appreciate their help in getting better beer into Mississippi and modernizing the laws that regulate beer by purchasing their products. Visit their website for their full lineup. See my post to find their Southern Hops’pitality IPA.

kegandbarrel.jpg

Keg and Barrel, the state’s only brewpub, has always pushed the limits as what’s allowable in the state. Expect to see a Russian Imperial Stout and a Double IPA from these guys once the cap is increased. Keg and Barrel is a sponser of Raise Your Pints and helped to get this legislation passed. Please show your thanks by frequenting their establishment.

backforty.jpg

Expect to see a “Big Firkin” from these guys for Keg and Barrel to celebrate the cap increase. The only place that I know of to find this will be at Keg and Barrel.

Update (5/22/12 9:12 PM):

Because of the way the law reads there can be no beer shipped or in the warehouse prior to the effective date for the law. For that reason we will rack the firkin into a sankey keg and ship it for delivery the day the law goes into effect.

The beer will be a “Belgian” treatment of Freckle Belly IPA. We will extract about 10 gallons of Freckle Belly IPA that is close to finished from the fermenters and then prime it with Belgian sugar and  Belgian yeast to take the normal hop intensity and combine it with the complexities of the Belgian treatment for a one of a kind experience just for Mississippi.

Yazoo_Brewing.jpg

According to the folks over at Yazoo, you can expect to see Yazoo Sue distributed to Mississippi. I am not sure of the timeline and would not expect it immediately, but it will definately be sold in Mississippi soon. Please support Yazoo, as they are also a sponser of Raise Your Pints.

I would also expect to see more offerings from Rogue in the near future. “And I know the distributors are working on a lot of the imports right now, including some of the Belgians/Trappists.” comments Butch Bailey, president of Raise Your Pints.
